Shannon Travel Information
On Ireland’s west coast, the scenery around Shannon is beautiful and offers plenty of interesting places to visit. Located just 20 minutes from Shannon airport, Ennis is a pretty little town, with a variety of accommodation options to be found in its narrow, winding streets. With medieval beginnings, Ennis is now a delightful base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. With restaurants to suit every taste and budget, an over 90 pubs to choose from, the evenings can be as lively or relaxed as you choose.
To the east of Shannon and Ennis is the 15th Century Bunratty Castle, which has been painstakingly restored, and now looks much as it did in the 1700s. The Folk Park next to the Castle is also an interesting place to visit, with 26 acres displaying a recreation of rural life 100 years ago.
For natural wonders, head for The Burren. Situated in north Clare, The Burren is an enormous limestone plateau – a geological phenomenon. The natural erosion of this plateau has formed a limestone pavement, in which you will discover a range of rare plants perfectly adapted to this strange environment. For another fascinating day out, visit the Cliffs of Moher. The sheer cliffs rise 200m from the Atlantic, and stretch for an amazing 8km – an awesome sight, and important nesting site for thousands of seabirds.
